Biography
Jake Smith is the British Under 23 Half arathon record holder and Welsh half marathon record holder. At only twenty two years old he is the third fastest UK half marathoner of all time after Mo Farah and Callum Hawkins with a PB of 60.31. This mark achieved on his senior GB debut at the World Half marathon Championships in Gdynia, Poland on 17 October 2020.
His first breakthrough over the half marathon distance was in 2019 when he ran a two-minute PB to finish 5th at the Boulogne Billancourt half marathon in France. His time of 62.02 was a British under-23 record by a full minute. At the beginning of 2020 he bettered his own mark and came agonisingly close to the 62 minute barrier when he ran 62.00 for 3rd place in the Big Half in London behind Chris Thompson and Kenenisa Bekele.
While road running will clearly be a discipline of focus for Jake in the future there is unfinished business on the track where his 5,000m (13.47) and 10,000m (29.01) are well due revision.
Jake has a background in mountain running, but it is clear he has a real talent in road running even whilst his primary focus for 2021 will be the the track seeking to qualify for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Through the coaching stewardship of James Thie whislt at Cardiff Met University Jake has already proven himself as someone to watch for the years ahead in British, European and World athletics.
