Biography
Ben is originally from Derby, UK but from 2011 was stateside under an athletics scholarship with American college Providence. On his full return to the UK Ben joined Team New Balance Manchester, a small group of full time elite distance runners from Europe (2017-2019).
Ben’s progress under Coach Steve Vernon in 2017 was clear with PB’s across 3,000m, 5,000m, 10,000m, 5km road and 10km road as well as National titles and GB representation in cross country. Strong results continued into 2018 with a 5th place at the Edinburgh Cross Country, a 61.12 PB at the Barcelona Half marathon as well as Team GB representation at the World Half Marathon Championships. His opening track race of 2018 was in California in April where he ran a PB of 28.14 for 10,000m.
Coming off the back of injury in late 2018 and early 2019 Ben tested his fitness at the Brighton 10km (29.03) and the paced the 65.00 group at the London Marathon, with a view to moving up to this distance. In July 2019 he showed that he has more than returned to form, clocking 27.57.60 to take the British title and 3rd in the European 10,000m cup in Highgate. He followed this up with another PB and World Championships qualifying time at the London Anniversary Games, stopping the clock at 13.19.47. He finished 3rd at the British Championships and World Championships trials in August. At the end of 2019 he won the British Athletics Cross Challenge and Euro Trials in Liverpool, earning automatic selection for the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon in December.
2020 has brought further success despite the challenges of trainng amidst a pandememic with a PB in the half marathon 60.55 in Antrim to go 4th on the UK all time list. His London Marathon debut in October saw him clock a 2.11.20 Olympic qualification time, a very solid start to a future at the distance.
